What Credentials Should HVAC Techs Have?

If you’ve ever had problems with your HVAC system, you know how important it is to be able to rely on a reputable heating and cooling company. Your contractor must have the right credentials so you know you’re getting quality products and service. At Merrell & Associates, we place a priority on ensuring that our technicians take part in the right training programs and have all necessary certifications, because ultimately it means only the best for our customers. While some certifications are voluntary, there are other credentials all qualified HVAC techs need.

Licensed, Bonded and Insured

Your technician’s license indicates approval by the state, to provide HVAC service. Licensing varies by state, so it is best to check with your local licensing department to verify requirements. Credentials may also be specific to the kind of job being performed. For example, if your technician is repairing a refrigerant leak, or adding refrigerant, EPA 608 certification is required.

A bonded technician provides an extra layer of security so that the customer will be compensated in the event of poor or incomplete service. Not all licensing boards require technicians to be bonded. Your contractor’s proof of insurance shows that you will be protected in case of any damage to your property. Insurance also protects injured workers.

NATE Certification

NATE certification is not required, but it is considered by many as a very important certification for HVAC technicians. The North American Technician Excellence (NATE) organization certifies technicians after they undergo rigorous testing on relevant specialty areas. NATE-certified technicians are expected to exhibit expertise, and a commitment to excellence.

Factory-Authorized Dealers

Factory-authorized dealers are also held to high standards, and their staff members typically receive additional training from specific manufacturers. As a Carrier® Factory Authorized Dealer, we employ NATE-certified technicians, and must adhere to superior standards of service at all times.

Benefits of Hiring a Certified Repair Specialist

Whether NATE-certified, bonded, licensed, insured, or from a factory-authorized dealer, technicians with the right credentials are more reliable, offer high levels of customer service, and generally employ best practices in all areas of service.
