Possible Reasons for Weak HVAC Airflow

HVAC airflow in Bremen, GA

Does your heating and cooling system struggle to keep your Bremen, GA home comfortable? Have you noticed hot or cold spots in certain areas of your home? Are your energy costs rising for no apparent reason? If so, you’re likely experiencing weak HVAC airflow. When your HVAC system can’t distribute air effectively, poor comfort and costly energy waste are sure to follow. Diagnosing airflow issues is best left to the heating and cooling professionals, but it helps to understand some common culprits.

Air Filter Restrictions

In addition to moving a tremendous volume of air, your HVAC system also transports all sorts of airborne particulates. This includes dust particles, mold spores, dander, and assorted liquid droplets. Pollen and other allergens are also common throughout Northwest Georgia. As air filters trap all those particles, it becomes progressively harder for air to pass through unobstructed. To keep your system flowing freely, be sure to check your filters regularly and change them at least every few months.

Dirty or Leaky Ductwork

Your air filters aren’t the only things that accumulate dirt and dust over time. Airborne particulates also tend to build up inside ducts and vents, potentially disrupting the flow of air. An even greater problem is air leaks within your ductwork. The typical duct system may lose up to 30% of the air that moves through it. If your ducts are especially leaky or poorly designed, you may even lose enough air to cause weak HVAC airflow.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil is a key air conditioner component that allows an AC system to produce cold air. When air is blown over the coil, the refrigerant inside cools the air by rapidly absorbing heat energy. The refrigerant is extremely cold and may cause the coil to freeze under certain conditions. This occurs most often with equipment that hasn’t been properly maintained. When the coil freezes, the ice buildup can become restrictive and cause airflow problems for your air conditioner.
