Ductless mini-splits shouldn’t leak water. If your ductless mini-split in Carrollton, GA, begins to do this, it may indicate a minor problem or a serious issue. Here are three reasons your ductless mini-split might leak water:
Dirty Filters
Mini-splits have a set of indoor air handler units, each of which must heat or cool a specific zone in your home. As it works, each handler generates a certain amount of condensation. Each handler also has its own air filter.
As air passes through the filter, debris accumulates, eventually creating a film that may be thick enough to block the passage of air. The diminished airflow that results has many negative consequences.
One is that moisture won’t be able to properly move through the system and may leak out instead. Poor airflow may also cause ice to appear on the system’s evaporator coils, and when the system subsequently attempts to defrost, water will drip out.
Drain Pan Issues
Mini-splits have a standard means of evacuating condensate. When the system is working properly, all such water flows out of the system and into a drain pan. From there, it passes into a drain line and disappears down the sewage line.
However, if the drain pan suffers sufficiently serious damage, it may not be able to properly hold and channel the water that drips into it. That water may then leak out onto your floor. The solution is to ask an HVAC maintenance service technician to repair or replace your pan.
Obstructed Drain Line
Finally, the drain line itself may not be able to properly channel water. If obstructions appear in the line, water will not be able to flow very far. As a result, it’ll bubble back out, resulting in a potentially severe leak.
