Why Is My AC Freezing Up in Carrollton, GA?

Why Is My AC Freezing Up in Carrollton, GA?

It seems ironic that even when temperatures in Carrollton, GA, hit 90 degrees, your air conditioner can be a solid block of ice. It’s even stranger that although the system is technically too cold, it’s blowing hot air. Find out why your AC is freezing up and what you can do about it.

1. Insufficient Airflow

Low airflow is one of the top reasons why HVAC systems freeze up. Essentially, the system gets too cold because there’s not enough warm air coming in to balance the temperature. To prevent this problem, replace your return vent filters every 30 to 45 days. Make sure that your ceiling vents or floor registers are open. Ensure plants and other debris are far away from the outdoor unit.

2. Low Refrigerant Levels

Low refrigerant levels can cause ice to build up on the coils or refrigerant line. This problem occurs because refrigerant gases cool the surrounding air when they’re compressed and then allowed to expand. If refrigerant levels are low, the gas can expand more than normal, which results in a lower-than-normal temperature. Consequently, the moisture the system removes from the air freezes on the coils before it can drain away.

3. Mechanical Issues

Mechanical issues, such as damaged air ducts or a faulty blower motor, can prevent the system from receiving enough warm air to run normally, which can lead to your AC freezing. Issues with the thermostat or electrical system can also affect the blower and reduce the normal air distribution rate.

What to Do if Your Air Conditioner Is Frozen

If your AC system or refrigerant lines keep freezing, replace your return filter to ensure that the system receives enough airflow. Continuing to run a frozen AC can lead to overheating and possible equipment damage, so have an HVAC service technician inspect your system if the problem doesn’t resolve.

In the meantime, you can run it using the fan-only setting. This will circulate warm air to help the ice thaw faster. For help troubleshooting your frozen air conditioner, call Merrell & Associates today. You find more information about our AC repair services online.
