History
Carrollton was founded in the early 1800s and took the name of the longest-lived signer of the Declaration of Independence. Despite being the county seat of Carroll County, the city remained small until the 1870s. Fortunately, it escaped the worst effects of the Civil War and was able to transform itself into a bustling railroad hub by the turn of the 20th century. Its textile industry also remained important until the late 20th century. These days, Carrollton is a bustling city with a tourism industry that adds over $100 million per year to the local economy. The town’s brush with a destructive tornado in the late 2000s provided an opportunity to rebuild and retool many local businesses.
Geography
The city of Carrollton is tucked into the hilly, pastoral landscape of west-central Georgia. It’s about 60 miles by car from the center of Atlanta and boasts robust transportation connections with the region’s larger cities, including Birmingham and Columbus, Georgia. It sits about halfway between the major arteries of Interstate 20 and Interstate 85 and is bisected by bustling U.S. Highway 27. The surrounding landscape features typical southern pine forests, cropland and dairy farms. The city itself consists of a commercial core that’s ringed by residential subdivisions of various ages.
Population and Demographics
After years of slow or nonexistent expansion, Carrollton has seen rapid population growth and now boasts a headcount of 25,000 residents. Much of this growth can be attributed to the region’s growing popularity as a retirement destination. Second-homeowners have flocked to the area for years, and many frequent visitors have elected to stay for the laid-back local lifestyle and low living costs. Carrollton also boasts a growing base of high-earning professionals who telecommute to jobs in Atlanta and Birmingham. Families with small children are well-represented here as well.
